The result of years of intense breeding by the renowned seed company Hazera, Onion ‘Crusado’ is a high performing variety exhibiting improved yields, quality and disease resistance. Crusado is a relatively early, long-day hybrid giving high yields of uniform, yellow-brown, round onions that are easy to chop whilst minimising wastage. This easy-to-grow variety features tough skin, thin necks and a very strong root system enabling it to outperform other varieties in dry conditions. One of the longest storing of white onions, the bulbs will store for several months and retain excellent quality. An excellent choice for the beginner or seasoned grower providing a bounty of well-flavoured, superb quality onions for long term use. Height: 45cm (18in). Spread: 15cm (6in).

Companion planting: Try growing onions with mint to confuse and deter onion fly.

Companion PlantingHow to grow Onions

Very high performing yellow round variety featuring tough skin, thin necks and a very strong root system, with good tolerance to dry conditions and excellent storage potential.

Plant onion sets in rows in any firm, well-drained soil in full sun. Prepare the planting area several weeks in advance by incorporating some well-rotted garden compost to improve drainage and soil fertility. Avoid planting onions on freshly manured soil. On particularly wet ground, try growing onion sets in raised beds. When growing onions from sets, plant the bulbs so that the tip of bulb is just protruding through the soil surface. Leave a space of 10cm (4") between each bulb, and 30cm (12") between each row.

Plant garlic in rows in any well drained soil in full sun. It is important that the soil does not become waterlogged so incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve drainage and feed the soil. On particularly heavy soils, grow garlic in raised beds. Carefully split the bulb into individual cloves. Plant each clove at a depth of 2cm (1") below the surface of the soil and 10cm (4") apart, leaving 45cm (18") between each row.

Live Plants

Organic Garden Catalogue strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

Non Standard Deliveries

Unfortunately like many companies in our industry we are currently only able to supply orders to UK based customers, excluding those in Northern Ireland. We reserve the right to contact you and advise an additional charge where necessary and are happy to quote for carriage of specific products to more remote areas. Some items may not be available to all areas.

We reserve the right to revise any carriage charges in the event of carrier price increase or other unforeseen circumstances. We will always advise of the carriage charge before payment is taken.
