The art of propagation is all about maintaining the right environment for successful growth once your seeds have germinated. Keep an eye on moisture levels to prevent drying out or waterlogging and, where appropriate, the use of cloches and tunnels will help maintain consistent conditions. Regularly rotate trays to give them even light exposure and help balanced growth. See our FAQs below for more helpful advice.
For strong indoor propagation, use seed trays with lids and fill them with good quality compost. Place them on a sunny windowsill to maintain consistent warmth. Alternatively, use an electric propagator to get the exact temperature required for germination. Regularly water with a fine spray to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
For outdoor germination, use cloches to protect seeds from harsh weather and pests. You can also use a cloche to pre-warm and raise the soil temperature to speed up germination. Ensure consistent watering and ventilate as needed to prevent humidity-related issues.
For effective crop growth through the winter, use cloches, polytunnels or greenhouses for protection against frost and harsh conditions. Choosing hardy crops will help, as well as ensuring good ventilation to avoid disease caused by excess moisture.
